For those who aren't aware of Phil Hansen yet, its time to start paying attention. We've just barely seen the beginning of Phil. I kinda felt like he's a little too under the radar for how fucked up he is riding a board, wether it be on snow or on wheels. He was basically born to stand sideways. Theres a lot natural talent inside of Phil and an insane eye for what'd be the sickest thing he could do at whatever moment. He charges at all times, takes insane slams and walks like a 60 year old after a full day of riding, even though he's only 21 years old. Phil also has some insane nicknames that I was hoping to get to the bottom of. For more of Phil, follow him on the gram (@nutrash_hansen) and look up his old parts on the internet. Keep an eye on this guy...
Ted Borland: Hey Phil whats up?
Phil Hansen: Yo yo wassup
TB: Wanna do an interview right now?
PH: Ya down. Just eating some pasta
TB: Nice did you snowboard today?
PH: Ya with Reis and Burtner and Gary and Zim. It was a good day
TB: Nice im pretty jealous. So im not sure how to do an interview really. Your from Colorado but you live in Washington. Which place do you like better?
PH: Ya from Colorado. I grew up there and moved to Washington when I was 18, just kinda winged it to see what happened. Colorado has its benefits like the sun and warmth, so it’s good for park and just kicking it but that also means less snow and less wildlife. So for that reason I’ll say Washington, more natural stuff to do and definitely better snow. I’ve definitely been outside more and exploring more since I’ve moved here
TB: yeah its nice up there. Which is better for skateboarding though?
PH: I guess that depends. Denver gets more sun, again, so it’s good for year round but it’s also cold as shit in the winter so you don’t really want to skate. I think there’s a skatepark in every suburb of Denver, like a legit one, since the legalization of weed passed and they’ve been using all the tax dollars on city parks. That’s pretty nice. All the parks are super new and smooth. I don’t know if Washington does that with taxes, but it’s definitely the center of just road tripping and having a bonfire and getting drunk in the woods. You can’t really drive around Denver and do that, but I feel like in Seattle and the whole northwest, that’s the way to go. And the rain makes you more eager to skate so when you finally get to you just wanna get it
TB: gotcha. Ok no more breakdowns. One word answer. Skateboarding or snowboarding?
PH: Hahahaha alright
Fuck. Snowboarding. Hurts less day to day
TB: Wow im surprised you answered that. Pretty mean question but alright. Whats easier? A mctwist on a skateboard, or a double cork on a snowboard?
PH: Everyone asks which I like better. Never had that one though. I’ll go double. Never leaves your feet and anyone could do them. It’s just fear
TB: Did the nickname “nutrash” come from skateboarding or snowboarding?
PH: Actually came from when I lost my virginity. But from the skatepark. I was scratching my nads the next day and my buddy called me nutrash in front of everyone. It really stuck when bridges kept calling me that at the launch one year
TB: Wait wait wait…. You might want to be careful how you word that next time you explain it haha
PH: I didn’t actually have a nutrash. It was mid summer and like 100 degrees
TB: Haha. What about your other nickname? I think it was based off of some headwear?
PH: What one is that?
TB: I had heard that you used to wear a Fedora and your name changed to Phildora
PH: Ah actually yes. I tend to try and forget about that time. People hate on the Fedora. I was down with Greg lutzka and liked his stee so I just tried to copy it
TB: Will we ever see Phildora again? Or is the Lutzka stage over?
PH: My buddy Bryce who I grew up with wants me to bring it back. Probably not skating, but I’ll bust out a yellow one I have on a nice date to keep impressing my girlfriend with the dope stee
TB: wow. Ok lets start wrapping this up. You had a part in “The Weather Outside is Weather” but that was it as far as legit full parts go. Is the dream for another part like that over for a kid your age? How old are you again? Are you just gonna post everything on instagram? I mean I know your always filming with Lucey for his projects but I wanna know whats on the horizon here
PH: I did. I wasn’t the proudest of that part since I didn’t really know what I was doing snowboard wise and I didn’t feel like my shots were that good but other people were hyped which is kinda the goal. I was 18 then and 21 now. I’d like to film another full part in a movie just because it gives you something to work toward, and I like that idea. Instagram is just kind of weird for me. I don’t like being on my phone a bunch or want to post everything on there because it’s all just scrolled past and lost. I try to use a phone as a portable camera to capture everything and put the b grade out there so that it’s all seen, but save everything else. I’m just glad I got to get in one movie and I’m glad people are still making some full ones, i still get more hyped to spend 10 bucks and see something than just another online edit. I guess as long as other people see it and are hyped then that’s good, but full vids will always stick out much more than just a solo part
TB: Well, you have the right idea I think. I know I’d like to see a new Phil part. Maybe we just need to bug Lucey for the footy. But I kind of also like whats happening on your instagram. Just straight ripping footage
PH: Either way. Insta is nice. I just wouldn’t want to leak actual footy there. Or at least not until the next year. I guess we’ll be saving the Fedora footy or I’ll have to go back to CO to film it
TB: Ok well I guess the people with have to wait for whatever your actually filming for to see the good shit. The instas pretty good for now though.
Any last words? Any nickname you’d rather have?
PH: I’ll try to keep the insta going decently. But I’m down for nutrash, it has character. Keeps it weird
TB: Yeah its weird for sure…
