Cue the Birds! was a commentary about adding "artsiness" like an ingredient added to a recipe. Something Portlandia made famous a decade later with their "Put a bird on it" parody. At this point we were using the bird theme as a way to have fun and be creative and wry. And have kind of a big communal arts and crafts project to "glue" the crew together. We'd spend hours making paper mache' bird masks. Luring birds in front of the camera with gluten, filming them, and then projecting them onto night spots. For the Seattle premiere, we cut out hundreds of paper birds and tied them to the end of fishing line hung from floating helium balloons (we made new balloons special for the event). We hired Todd again for an animation that was inspired during a medical experiment he signed up to do for "easy" cash that studied muscle atrophy and he had to stay in bed for like 30 days straight. He had a lot of time on his hands. Some people say Gus Engle's part in this video is their favorite ever. Maybe that was me that said that.
Featuring: Jesse Burtner, Sean Genovese, Gus Engle, Matt Edgers, Patrick McCarthy, Mark Landvik, Jed Hoffman, Andre Spinelli, Ben Bogart, Roger Post, Mark Thompson, True Love, Brady Farr, John Laing, Kirk Stinebaugh, Luke Mathison and many more.
